9000:2000 An Essential Guide to the New Standard by Eric
Stapp
This book, with a publication date of March 2001, was written
after ISO 9000:2000 was officially released, so it is sure to
contain all the nuances of the new standard.
With the introduction of the 2000 revision to the ISO 9000 family of standards, organizations are faced for the first time with significant differences. In order to address perceived shortcomings in the earlier versions, and to incorporate various lessons learned from the over 300,000 organizations now registered, the ISO 9000 family of standards was significantly changed.
Some requirements, primarily those dealing with management responsibility, communication, and continual improvement of the quality management system, have been added or significantly changed. Other portions of the standard, while introducing no new requirements, have become less prescriptive, leaving each organization more leeway to tailor its quality management system to its unique needs.
Throughout the new standard, ISO presents quality management in a systems approach - processes with inputs and outputs interacting with other processes. This more closely approximates how organizations actually operate, especially compared with the separate elements of the previous editions.
This book is intended to be an introductory guide to the details of the new standard. By learning what the new standard entails, organizations can more effectively implement those requirements. Organizations that understand the requirements of the standard, and how those requirements pertain to them, can create more effective quality management systems.
